DEPOT NEARING THE CENTURY MARK
The home of the Historical Society, the Depot Museum, is nearly one hundred years old. In order to mark this important milestone, the Board of Directors has begun to make plans to commemorate the event. The Society has decided to issue an ornament displaying a distinctive drawing of the Depot that will be packaged with information about the building's history. The ornaments will be available this fall in plenty of time for Christmas and should be priced at about $15 each. The Board will also host a gala reception in honor of this anniversary. Arrangements for the reception have not been finalized as yet, but a Sunday afternoon, perhaps in March, has been discussed. Future newsletters will provide you with all the details. In 1909 the Atlantic Coast Line Railroads constructed the depot as a replacement for the original Tarpon Springs station that burned to the ground in 1908. For nearly 75 years, it served as the transportation and communication hub of the town. Beginning in 1976, the Society began to use available space in the building and gradually expanded its presence in the structure when the railroad no longer served Tarpon Springs. As an important element in the Downtown Historic District, the Depot was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Thanks to grants from the United States Department of Transportation and the Save America's Treasures Program as well as from funds made avalable by the City, the Depot underwent an extensive restoration in 2004 and 2005 that restored its exterior to its original 1909 appearance and transformed the interior into a modern museum. Today thousands of people, both tourists and local residents, visit the Depot Museum each year to discover the fascinationg and unique history of the community and to obtain information about current activities and events. ********************** |
IN APPRECIATIONThose who stroll along the walkway between the Depot and the Greek Pizza Kitchen can enjoy the display of plants now gracing that area. City Horticulturalist, Shannon Brewer and her staff located eight planters in several sizes and prepared them for the variety of flowering and leafy plants that were donated and planted by the Tarpon Springs Garden Club. This collaboration between the City and the Garden Club has enhanced the west side of the Depot and brighteded the walkway for the many pedestrains using that corridor. The Society is very grateful to all who worked together to make this happen. ********************* ANNUAL PICNIC |
At the Annual Picnic on May 10, a large group enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch and a tour of Heritage Village that took us to the four structures at the Village that have been moved from Tarpon Springs. A picture of the group was taken in front of the Safford Pavilion that was moved from Cycadia Cemetary. The tour was conducted by Ellen Babb, who has served on the professional staff there for twenty years and was recently named Director of Museum Operations, overseeing all activities and functions. The Society thanks Ellen for offering such warm hospitality on May 10 and congratulates her on her new position. |
